Helen Hamlyn Trust
In September 2005, the Focus on Food Campaign embarked on an important new project instigated by the Helen Hamlyn Trust called Grow it, Cook it! in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society’s Flourish initiative. This project forms part of HHT’s Open Future initiative - an exciting and forward-thinking programme for primary schools.
Grow it, Cook it! is running as a pilot project within ten primary schools along the south coast of England and in ten primary schools in Wakefield and Leeds with the aim of delivering a holistic approach to teaching children to grow, cook and share food together.
Project Officers, from Focus on Food and the RHS, are visiting the pilot schools on a regular basis to work with teachers and children at Key Stages 1 and 2, involving them in creating, planting and tending to their own fruit and vegetable gardens, as well as learning about container planting for indoor and outdoor species and preparing, cooking and eating their own kitchen-garden produce.
